Intelligent Speed Assistance: The Transformational Technology for Improved Speed Management
Transforming Transportation (#TTDC25) Side Event
March 13th 13.00 to 16.30 (EST)
A tipping point has been reached for Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) to transform strategies for improved speed management that will promote both road safety and energy efficiency. Improved speed management is a central goal of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2030) and progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target to halve road traffic deaths #50by30.
Since July 2024 ISA has become a mandatory requirement for all new vehicles sold in the European Union. There is also promising evidence that deployment of ISA in vehicles fleets shows positive safety and environmental benefits by reducing speeding infringements, avoiding road crashes/injuries, and delivering fuel savings. Recent positive experience with city authorities in London and New York demonstrates the potential for accelerated promotion of ISA by cities worldwide.
Recommendations in support of ISA are included in the World Bank’s Guide for Safer Speeds, the WHO/World Bank Speed Management Manual and the Global Plan for the Decade. ISA has also been endorsed by the US National Transportation Safety Board and the Road to Zero Coalition. There is enormous scope to accelerate penetration of ISA technologies in major vehicle markets and fleets worldwide. Successful penetration of ISA technology is also a key pathway to real world progress in the deployment of connected and autonomous vehicles.
The #TTDC25 side event will give an overview of ISA development and technology and its potential contribution to improved speed management policies by Governments - both national & local - and by commercial & public fleet operators. The format of the event will cover four topics as follows:
