Consumer Champion – The Institute for Road Traffic Education
The Institute for Road Traffic Education (IRTE) has been Global NCAP’s partner in the Safer Cars for India project since 2014. Under the dynamic leadership of its President Dr Rohit Baluja, IRTE has been a stalwart supporter of independent consumer crash testing. For the Safer Cars for India project IRTE has provided essential support to Global NCAP. They have provided vital logistical assistance, hosted results launch events, and maintained a constructive dialogue with both industry and government. Their championing of the Safer Cars for India project has been the essential platform for its success so far.
Innovation Award – The Government of India
The Government of India has acted decisively to adopt new vehicle safety regulations that represent a highly innovative initiative for such a major emerging automobile manufacturing nation. New crash test standards for front and side impact came into force in 2017 and this year will be supplemented with a new standard for pedestrian protection. Speed limitation devices have also been mandated and important action has also been taken to promote improved motorcycle safety. Automatic headlights were introduced in 2017 and anti-lock brakes earlier this year. In respect of pedestrian protection and anti-locks brakes for motorcycles, the Indian Government’s regulations are now set to be more advanced than those of the United States of America.
Individual Achievement – Dr Adrian Lund
Last year Dr Lund retired as President of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) after a highly successful 36 year career. His outstanding leadership of the Institute and his strong commitment to a scientific approach to highway safety has led to improvements in vehicle and road safety that have saved tens of thousands of lives. Among the major impacts of the Instituteunder Dr Lund’s leadership has been research supporting the implementation of graduated driver licensing laws, a federal mandate for electronic stability control on passenger vehicles, the development of the small overlap frontal impact test, and the adoption of a voluntary commitment from every major automaker in the USA to make autonomous braking a standard feature on virtually all of their vehicles by 2022. Dr Lund has also demonstrated a strong commitment to international road safety co-operation and also serves as a trustee of Global NCAP.

Global NCAP hosts its first World Congress in Delhi – September 2018
Global NCAP hosts its first ever World Congress in Delhi from September 26 – 29, 2018. The Congress will bring together the community of New Car Assessment Programmes (NCAPs) worldwide to share experience about independent consumer vehicle safety rating. The meeting will also provide a unique opportunity to assess the contribution that safer vehicles can make to the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety and the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Delhi World Congress will facilitate high level dialogue on a global road map for vehicle safety with the automobile manufacturers, senior policy makers, road safety experts, and fleet managers. A key theme of the World Congress will be how NCAPs worldwide have succeeded in building a market for safer cars by raising consumer awareness of the critical safety choices they make when buying a new vehicle. The experience of NCAPs in South East Asia and Latin America and their relevance to similar emerging markets in India and Africa will also be discussed.
