ASEAN NCAP Launches First Phase Of Its Independent Crash Test Programme

Global NCAP warmly welcomes the news that the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP) carried out its first official crash test in Melaka, Malaysia on 15th November 2012. The test is the first of seven which will take place during ASEAN NCAP’s initial phase. Cars to be tested are the Ford Fiesta, Honda City, Hyundai i10, Nissan March, Perodua MyVi, Proton Saga and Toyota Vios.

David Ward, Secretary General of Global NCAP said, “We congratulate ASEAN NCAP on launching their Phase I set of tests and are confident that their progress will make a significant contribution to lowering fatalities in the region.”

ASEAN NCAP was established as one of the key objectives of Global NCAP; to support the development of new consumer crash test programmes in emerging markets where vehicle growth is strong but independent consumer information on crashworthiness is frequently not readily available. Global NCAP aims to offer support to New Car Assessment Programmes in emerging economies and regions, especially during the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020).

ASEAN NCAP has also benefitted from technical assistance from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). ANCAP’s Chief Executive Officer, Nicholas Clarke said, “As part of the Decade, ANCAP has assisted with the establishment of ASEAN NCAP providing technical and program support and advice to ensure the ASEAN program pursues protocols and procedures that will provide meaningful, accurate, repeatable and reliable test results. The results yielded by ASEAN NCAP testing will raise consumer awareness in the region and ensure motor vehicle safety standards are elevated.”

“While road fatalities in developed countries are generally decreasing, they are on the rise across the ASEAN region. We’re already seeing this new ASEAN test program put pressure on manufacturers to supply safer vehicles, and simple technologies such as anti-lock brakes (ABS) for motorcycles will also help combat the toll,” said Mr Clarke.

Results from the ASEAN NCAP testing will be released in 2013.

ASEAN NCAP is administered by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) with the support of Global NCAP, ANCAP, and the Automobile Associations of ASEAN countries. Further details on ASEAN NCAP can be found at www.aseancap.org.
